About Carolyn

Carolyn’s work in clay began in 1986 at the Fort Mason Art Center in San Francisco. Originally inspired by the simplicity and elegance of the old Asian pottery, her current work is also informed by her admiration for the more contemporary ceramic works of Hans Coper and Lucy Rie. Each piece is an original work, with a life and breath of its own. In addition to being explorations of form and function, the pieces also serve as canvases for exploring modern juxtapositions and interpretations of traditional colors.

All ware is hand-thrown and trimmed. It is then coated with an iron-oxide bearing glaze, then fired to 2400 degrees in a reduction atmosphere, which produces a range of colors from pale, clear celadons to deep moss greens, dark brown-blacks to intense rust red. Double coating one color over another produces a depth of color and surface effects that cannot otherwise be achieved.

This pottery is extremely durable, contains no lead, and is food and dishwasher safe. It is not, however, recommended for use in the microwave.
