About Margaret-Ann

Margaret-Ann

In 1992, printmaker and painter, Margaret-Ann began pursuing themes inspired by wild and domesticated animals of the North American continent as well as those from her native France. The tragedies of 9/11/2001 redirected her artistic vision and as a result, her work, influenced by the socio-political events occurring globally, quickly evolved into an abstract style called Internal Expressionism. Texture and color figure prominently and are applied using an assortment of water-based media. Her prints and paintings express emotions released by world-wide upheavals.

The Discovery Series

In June 2005, Clemente started work on the Discovery Series – small, intimate paintings with multiple layers of acrylic and latex paint. Texture is created with sand, tiny glass beads, pumice and gel medium. In between each solid color layer are abstract designs. Each layer is applied randomly, at times leaving previous layers visible. The resulting piece presents multiple tiers of color, texture and design that are likened to finding untapped facets and strengths within one’s self.

The Color Fields

In 2003, Clemente started work on her Color Field paintings. These are similar to the Discovery Series, but are executed on a larger scale. In some pieces, Clemente has included her original monotype prints and monotype marquetry pieces that appear through the glazes and varnishes she employs. These abstract paintings demonstrate a dominant color theme, while remaining simple and meditative in feeling.

Clemente maintains her studio at the Twin Pines Art Center in Belmont, California where she teaches drawing, painting and printmaking.
